"Light meters read; photographers interpret."

Artificial Light

A couple in town for the rodeo danced the night away at Cadillac Bar on Saturday, January 26, in the Stockyards of Fort Worth, Texas. The two enjoyed Fort Worth's prime cowtown night life experience as a weekend festivity. (TCU Photo/Kaia Naftel)
The picture above illustrates "artificial light" as it was taken indoors at the Cadillac Bar in Fort Worth, Texas. I liked this picture for its authenticity and country spirit. The subjects had no knowledge of the picture until after the shot was taken, making it candid and unique. I captured the couple in the middle of a twirl during a two-step dance. I chose to increase the ISO settings for this particular shot as my light source was dim and my subjects were in motion. By doing so I was able to expose the dancers well and maintain minimal noise.

Diffused Light

Brandon Cobb, 23 years old, a Physical Therapy student at Tarrant County College, posed for aspiring photojournalist, Kaia Naftel, on Sunday, January 27, at the Orion apartment complex. Brandon took pity on Kaia and decided to be her subject for the day. (TCU Photo/Kaia Naftel)
The subject, Brandon Cobb, posed for a picture under the gloomy cloud filled Fort Worth skies. I found the fire hydrant to be interesting and had him sit against the object. ISO 100 was an adequate mode for this image because my subject was stationary, there was plenty of light, and I wanted a clear image with the least amount of grain.

Available/Direct Light

This snapshot exemplifies direct light because the light source derives from the sun. Generally direct light casts a shadow of the subject, similar to what is displayed above. This was a fun image because it captures the essence of being "young at heart." Although an adult, Brandon's light hearted play demonstrates a kid at heart as he catches up with some hometown buddies.
